Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp / 30 g All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 tbsp / 10 g Cocoa Powder
  • 2 tbsp / 24 g Granulated Sugar
  • ¼ tsp / 1 g Baking Powder
  • A Pinch Salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp / 45 ml Whole Milk
  • 2 tbsp / 30 ml Vegetable Oil
  • ½ tsp / 3 ml Vanilla Essence

Filling and Garnishes

  • 2 tbsp of Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips or Chunks
  • Powdered Sugar Optional
  • Chocolate Sauce Optional

Instructions

Prepare The Mug

  • First, take a microwave-safe mug ( roughly 1 cup measurement), which allows enough space for the cake to rise.

Add Dry Ingredients

  • Measure out 4 tbsp of all-purpose flour and 2 tbsp of Cocoa Powder and add it to the mug.
  • Sprinkle ¼ tsp of baking soda, 2 tbsp of granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt over the flour mixture.
  • Use a fork to mix the dry ingredients thoroughly until no lumps remain.

Mix In Wet Ingredients

  • Pour 3 tbsp of milk and 2 tbsp of vegetable or neutral oil into the mug.
  • Stir in ½ tsp of vanilla essence into the mixture.
  • Mix the batter well until it’s smooth. Scrape the edges and bottom of the cup to ensure that no ingredients get stuck there.

Add Chocolate Chunks

  • Place 1-2 small chunks of semi-sweet chocolate, or you can use 2 tbsp of chocolate chips in the center of the mug.
  • Gently press the chocolate just slightly into the cake batter. Make sure the chocolate is partially submerged but not pushed all the way to the bottom.

Microwave, Serve and Enjoy!

  • Place the mug in the microwave and cook it on high power for 1-2 minutes, depending on your microwave. Once the cake rises to the top and looks set, the lava cake is done baking.
  • Carefully remove the mug cake from the microwave and let it cool for 5 minutes.
  • Dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar or chocolate sauce, and get ready to dig in with a spoon while the delicious chocolate lava is still hot!
