Beep, beep! That’s how my morning starts with the alarm clock pulling me from deep sleep. Between getting the kids ready for school(and hunting for lost homework!), checking my emails and preparing breakfast, my mornings are always a blur. For times like this, quick breakfasts like today’s classic French toast are a total lifesaver.
What makes me happiest about making French toast is how much my kids absolutely love it! With so many toppings to choose from, they have absolutely no problem eating it on a regular basis. You can even pack a tiffin with a different topping than what they had for breakfast and it’s going to be a whole new treat!
And the best part?
It’s a mess-free meal- no spills or sticky fingers to clean afterward! From whisking the eggs and milk in a bowl to toasting the bread in sizzling butter, making French toast is a simple process that creates a delicious breakfast that everyone in my family enjoys.
Topping Ideas For A Classic French Toast
Although French toast can be enjoyed on its own, I hardly ever eat it without toppings! From fresh fruits to classic whipped cream to a sprinkle of cinnamon, there are endless variations available for toppings. Here are some of my favorites you can try and see if they work out for you:
Syrup and Butter
When in doubt, always go for the classic options!
Syrup and butter are a popular topping for French toast and it is for good reason. The rich and creamy texture of the butter compliments the crispiness of the toasted bread slices while the syrups help add mild sweetness to double the taste! You can pair the French toast with maple syrup, honey, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup or fruit syrups to add a burst of delicious flavor.
Fresh Fruits
Want to add fruits to your morning meal?
You can add the fruits right on top of the bread that you just toasted!
Fresh fruits like blueberries, raspberries, peaches, apples and mango are some of the fruits that pair well with French toast. If fresh fruits are not in season or available at your home, you can use frozen ones for your convenience. Just heat the frozen fruits in a saucepan before adding them to your toast and sprinkle a little sugar on top to make them more juicy and flavorful.
Whipped Cream
Want something light and delicious for your French toast without any sort of extra fuss?
Try whipped cream and powdered sugar combination. Whipped cream adds a fluffy and creamy texture to the french toast while the sugar adds sweetness to compliment the cream. For a healthier version, you can use homemade whipped cream instead of the store-bought version. Sprinkle some cinnamon or nutmeg on top and you have got the most delicious breakfast ready to make your morning feel extra special!
Nutella and Bananas
This one is for the kids who are picky eaters!
On the days my kids are making it difficult to eat anything, Nutella and bananas come to the rescue! Kids love Nutella and once I spread a generous layer of it on their French toast, they will eat the toast without a single complaint. And that gives me the chance to sneak in some healthy stuff in it- like bananas! To make the breakfast extra delicious(if I have time for that actually!)I like to caramelize the banana slices with butter and a little brown sugar before adding them to the French toast.
Yogurt and Honey
If you are looking for a healthy topping idea, the yogurt and honey combo is the perfect one for you!
Not only is this pairing yummy, but it’s also packed with protein and natural sweetness that makes your morning meal light, yet nutritious. You can go for Greek yogurt or regular yogurt based on your preference. I like the Greek yogurt better because of the creamy tanginess it provides that pairs well with the French toast.
Instead of just mixing the honey and yogurt together and spreading it on your bread, it’s best to drizzle the honey on top instead so you get to control the sweetness level. As honey has a concentrated sweetness, a small drizzle goes a long way. So, add a small amount first and increase as needed. To enjoy a contrasting flavor, try chilling the yogurt before serving as it feels fresher and more refreshing against the warm toast.
